SouthIndia

Ruben S. Vijayaruben General Secretary of Junior Minsitry informs that "The juniors together with their leaders are enjoying their fellowship and are growing in spiritual and social understanding. " This occurs through a straightforward strategy of ensuring the circles sing, play and pray together. Total membership currently stands at 3500. Extracts from his latest report includes;

  • Two congregations have recently added Junior Ministry to their local mission Saron and Karunalayam. At the same time Vriddhachalam and Suviseshapuram have been revived.
  • A recent focus for study has been ‘Social Awareness Building’. This was conducted in association with the Lions Club, Thiyagadurugam.
  • A weekend camp for 250 seniors and leaders was organised around a theme ?Be Alert?.

A group of 13 youngsters from Danmission Youth Group (Denmark) have visited the organisation.

  • Performing Concerts form part of the programme within Junior Ministry. The aim is that they strengthen and develop the skills and talents among the young people. Audiences come from both the Junior Ministry and beyond giving young people the opportunity to demonstrate their skills. One such concert held in Pennadam attracted a gathering of 600 persons comprising children, young people and adults drawn from ALC congregations and the general public. The whole programme had been meticulously planned to go with the spirit of the concert theme ‘Redemption Is Drawing Near.’
  • A Sunday was allocated to observe Junior Ministry Day. It is to be on the 5th February. Special Children's Orders of Worship were produced and circulated to all circles. The children were very much excited to take part in this special worship service.
  • 50 team leaders took part in a workshop training programme facilitated by a group of 6 young people from "Lutheran Youth Encounter" Minneapolis, USA. New songs, new games and how to plan for devotions were all taught and are now in use during the weekly team programme.

European Fellowship

FDF (Denmark) has appointed the new Secretariat for the European Fellowship. The Chair is Ms Maria Harbo Thomsen – she participated the EF Annual Meeting in June and worked hard at the FDF National Camp, so some have already had the pleasure of meeting her.

On the 19th September FDF nominated Mr Dennis Frederiksen to be the EF Secretary. Dennis is a former EuroClass student and has been very active in the international field in FDF. For example he was responsible for many of the international activities at the FDF National Camp this summer. We wish you both a warm welcome.

New Zealand

BBNZ STARTS NEW PROGRAMME:

To help stem the declining numbers of youngsters attending BB the Executive of BBNZ just over three years ago took the positive decision to commence an all new action packed 21st century style programme for youngsters in the 6 –13 year age range. ICONZ was commenced with a new modern style T Shirt and baseball style cap. There are no military terms and the curriculum includes much physical and outdoor activity.

GROWTH IN ICONZ:

There are now 21 ICONZ units operating with three more ready to start in the next few months. The total number of boys attending to date is 350 with 100 volunteer leaders and helpers.

ICONZ PROGRAMMES:

Iconz has three levels of programmes: Iconz Anchor (6 & 7 year olds); Iconz Adventure (8 – 11 year olds). ICONZ Xtreme 11 – 12 year olds). The Executive have asked for work to commence on developing an ICONZ style curriculum for 13 – 18 year olds. This is expected to be up and running late 2007.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING:

To date there have been five leadership training courses this year attended by over 100 volunteer leaders of Brigade and ICONZ.

ROAD–SHOW:

As a means of keeping in touch with volunteer leaders and helpers 5 Road–Shows have been held throughout the country. These were three hour sessions of information swapping, listening to the "grass roots" and talking about the future direction of BB/ICONZ – all exciting. Over 120 BB officers and ICONZ leaders attended – a very encouraging response.

NLDC (National Leadership Development Course)

This is a very intensive 7 full days and nights live in training course for the more senior guys. 10 Stage 2 participants camped out solo for three nights with no watch, radio or any human contact – they just loved it. The accountability and evaluation on each participant is of the highest standard. 42 young men plus 12 leaders attended.

Malaysia

Junior Work Malaysia (JWM) recently hosted a very successful International Camp that celebrated 40 years of mission through their organisation. The camp was attended by over 300 people and was held in Port Dickson from the 2 – 6 June. Their theme was "Excelling in Christ" and was based around the gospel of Matthew.

Nancy Clemons the Secretary of JWM reports that Throughout the camp there was this spirit of celebration, giving thanks to God for His continuous blessings on us. Old leaders with their spouses and children met their former friends, young leaders who continuously supported and learned what Junior Work was, even the children from the various homes and Juniors from all the congregations mingled and made new friends and shared their experiences with us. During the planning and preparation of the camp we did have our ups and downs, but we worked day and night to achieve our goal.

The opening ceremony saw some of the foreign guests dressed with their full uniform; others came with their National costume. Rev. Paul Kerishnan opened the ceremony by giving thanks to our Lord and God Almighty, after which we sang the National Anthem followed by the raising of the flags. Bishop Julius Paul officially opened the ceremony by cutting the ribbon and releasing balloons. Mr. Edmond from TELC and Sister Nancy Clemons from ELCM gave a short speech on the present situation of Junior Work and the future plans for the inistry.

Rev. Solomon Raja made sure that food was on time and we had ample food for the whole camp. We had a variety of food. All campers enjoyed the food, especially the foreign guests. The campers made Malaysian cakes, which were served during tea time in the afternoon.?

The programme included games, competitions, a Telematch, a guest speaker Rev. David Devapurian, cooking (frying goring pisang and keleda), singing, making a Junior Work flag and coconut shell key chain.

The greatest problem they report was a lack of water, as the tank was not large enough to cope with all the campers.

Danish Camp

FDF?s Julsoe camp "New Facets" camp held from the 5th to the 14th July in Sletten, Denmark was a great success. The Camp gathered around 13 000 participants for an unforgettable camp. A number of Global Fellowship member organizations were present. In fact there were around 500 foreign participants from all over the world.

The former EF EuroClass students made a big effort assisting the program, especially in the international village called "Mundus".

Tuovi Varis the EF Secretary comments that ?FDF always seems to have the creativity to develop something new, the courage to put the innovations into action and the generosity to share the ideas with others. Thanks again!?

GF Grants

Member organisations are welcome to submit applications for project funding either from or through GF at any time. The way to start this process is through making contact with the GF office. Initially a brief project outline should be forwarded to the Chief Executive either by email or sent in the post. Tim Pratt will then work with organisations in order to prepare an application for the consideration of the Executive Committee which meets at least two times a year.

Funding is limited and it is unlikely that we will approve an application in excess of GBP5000,00. Increasingly however, we are seeking to act as a funding broker for members by sourcing funding bodies that are sympathetic to our cause.

Applications are prioritised according to need and in particular GF is interested in funding the following types of projects;

  1. Development of self–sufficiency.
  2. Development of the regional capacity and extension of our ministry into new areas.
  3. Development of leadership.
  4. Growth in membership.
  5. Participation and involvement of young people.
  6. Development of an international perspective.

BBUK

As part of its strategic aim of looking at its credibility and reputation with the churches, BBUK has launched an ambitious campaign to start 125 new companies by the time of the Brigade's 125th anniversary in 2008.

The Brigade has been involved in dialogue with the churches at a number of different levels and is seeking to raise its profile in partnering the church to attract and retain youngsters who have no other connection with the church. Although there has been a steady decline in membership over the last 20 years there are still 60,000 boys and young people attending the Brigade each week and BBUK believes that this is a great opportunity for mission and outreach.

New programmes have been developed for the under 11's and work is being done ready for the older members. The Brigade is more flexible and seeks to be able to adapt to the differing needs and situations which different churches bring. There is a constitutional review taking place which is looking at membership, terminology and the part that younger leaders can play in developing the movement. We believe the Brigade has a bright future, but we need to be in a position where we are able to respond to the needs of young people in the 21st century.

Kenya

"This year has been special in that more than ever before there has been, and still is, an urgent need to educate chaplains in their duties as company officers" says William Kithara the National Secretary of BB Kenya.

"The plans for this year will involve a very large number of pastors. It has been realised that pastors have not fully taken their role mainly because of lack of information. In the first quarter of 2006, there are expected to be one?day seminars in nine different areas."

An enduring high priority is the tutoring of all leadership. To this end a new national team of trainers were recruited and certified in March.

At the local level the organisation is encouraging learning in the areas of drug abuse, alcohol and HIV/AIDS.

Rwanda

Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade (BGB) in Rwanda has now been operating for six years with a very encouraging reception from both the church and community, leading to rapid growth. They have already expanded into all regions throughout the country.

Activities include football matches, making mud bricks to construct churches, rebuilding homes of both the poor and genocide victims, extending BGB into Universities and tertiary institutions along with training up new officers and establishing new companies. In August of this year they will host the Brigades of East Africa at a youth camp to be held in Kigali.

Shortage of finances does not always allow for uniforms or for resources and literature on programming. One of their visions for the future is to have instruments to establish a performing brass band which will be one of the ways they hope to generate income. They believe that the band will also lead to many more children joining Brigade.

The National Secretary, Rev David Nzungize, has been involved in training new officers to lead the work in Burundi.

  • Thank Him for the vision and passion of our national leaders.

Jamaica

Easton Daley reports that the Caribbean was ravaged by hurricanes during the last season. This has had an adverse effect on BB Jamaica. Despite this and its resulting lower numbers, they enjoyed a successful camp held in Manchester over Founder’s Day Weekend. Their general programmes and activities remain vibrant and include; football competitions, Remembrance Day Parades, The Annual Christmas Treat and the enrolling or reviving of new companies. It is noted that seven BB members received civic awards for outstanding volunteerism at a national ceremony. They report that enthusiasm is high and look forward to hosting the Sports Camp for the Region on 14 to 22 July.

BB Cameroon continues to experience steady growth. The country now has three regions covered by BB with a fourth soon to be established. Rev Joseph Kindefu reports that literally hundreds of boys and girls have come to profess faith in Jesus Christ as a result of their ministry. They have identified that ongoing training of leadership is vital to support this growth and will persist in placing a priority on this activity. They have recently acquired some farmland which they hope will not only bring income for the organisation but also provide jobs for boys and for the local population.

Tanzania

Ernest Ndiege reports from Tanzania that the new movement is growing well. They now host 10 companies and have increased boy members from 430 to 620 over the last 12 months. Typically they will meet on a Sunday where the programme includes shared games, Bible teachings and Drill. They have enjoyed support from both the Girls’ Brigade in Tanzania and also Boys’ Brigade in Kenya, who have assisted with training some of the 27 Officers. They have recently introduced an HIV / AIDS awareness campaign. The greatest challenge they currently experience is the high demand from churches wishing to start the ministry in their local parish along with limited funding to achieve all they wish and pray for.
